This May will see the return of cycle racing to the Royal Victoria Park in Bath. Following on from its successful introduction in 2011, Bath Cycle Races 2012 features a 5 week series that will run every Wednesday evening throughout May. Round 1 starts at 6.45pm, Wednesday 2nd May, with each evening being hosted by one of the local cycling clubs in association with British Cycling.
Supported by Bath and North East Somerset Council, the series is part of the Council’s campaign to make Bath a more cycle friendly city and by all accounts following last year’s launch they are succeeding.
The short and sharp nature of the circuit, which includes a tight turn around the obelisk, promises fast and furious racing, great for spectators and competitors alike. Each round will see 4 races catering for youth’s through to elite categories.
New this year, it is also planned to hold ‘Go Ride’ events in the park to cater for younger children and aspiring racers in advance of the main races.
Five local clubs are running the 2012 series, with Avonlea Treasure Race Team, Bath Cycling Club, Bath University Cycling Club, Somer Valley Cycling Club and Velo Club Walcot each hosting one round. By working together the local clubs are able to ensure each evening is well supported and the series is a success.
Participants can enter as many of the rounds as they wish. Points will be awarded in each round with series champions being crowned and prizes awarded at the final event. Race information and entry details can be found on ‘The Races’ page, and spectators are encouraged to come and watch this free event.
It is also planned that there will be a sixth race evening taking place during the Bike Bath cycle festival on Saturday 23rd June at Royal Victoria Park. Details for these races can be found on www.bikebath.co.uk
